Hunley Submarine Recovery

“We like RISA because of its ease of use and affordability. RISA-3D is one of the few programs we have confidence in to give us accurate results for our steel design projects.  It performs complete code checking for AISC, whether we are using LRFD or ASD.”

About the project:
Engineers at Oceaneering International, Inc., led by Perry L. Smith, P.E., designed a 63-foot span steel truss and two 18-foot steel suction piles that were used to raise the H.L. Hunley, a Confederate States submarine sunk during the Civil War. The Hunley was recovered on August 8, 2000, after spending nearly 135 years buried beneath the ocean floor off the coast of Charleston. Oceaneering International, Inc.’s efforts during the recovery of the ship were chronicled in the July 2002 edition of National Geographic.
